Let's talk real numbers. The total cost depends on three main factors: the charger itself, the electrical work required, and permit fees.
Charger unit: $500–$900 for a quality hardwired unit. We typically recommend chargers from reputable brands that are certified for Canadian climates and carry proper safety ratings.
Installation labour and materials: $800–$2,000+ depending on complexity. A straightforward install where your panel is close to the garage sits at the lower end. If we need to run cable across your basement, through walls, or 20+ metres to a detached garage, costs increase.
ESA permit: Around $100–$150 in most cases.
For a typical Whitby home with an attached garage and a panel in the basement, expect to pay $1,400–$2,500 all-in for a complete Level 2 installation.

Does Your Electrical Panel Have Capacity?
This is the question that catches many homeowners off guard.
Most Level 2 EV chargers require a 40A or 50A dedicated circuit. If your home has a 100A panel—common in houses built before the 1990s—you may not have enough capacity to add this load safely.

If an upgrade is needed, a panel upgrade to 200A service typically runs $2,500–$4,500 depending on the scope. It's a bigger investment, but it also future-proofs your home for additional loads like heat pumps, hot tubs, or a second EV down the road.
Permit Requirements in Ontario
Every EV charger installation in Ontario requires an electrical permit from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). This isn't optional—it's the law.
The permit ensures the work gets inspected and meets the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. It also protects you. Unpermitted electrical work can void your home insurance, create liability issues if you sell, and pose genuine safety risks.
We pull permits for every job and schedule the ESA inspection as part of our standard process. You don't need to handle any of that paperwork yourself.
Be cautious of any contractor who suggests skipping the permit to save money. It's a red flag.
Hardwired vs. Plug-In Chargers
You'll see two main installation types: hardwired and plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet).
Hardwired units connect directly to your electrical system. They're permanent, clean-looking, and slightly more efficient. Most residential installations we do are hardwired.
Plug-in chargers use a 240V outlet, similar to what your dryer uses. The advantage is portability—you can take the charger if you move. The downside is a slightly bulkier setup and one more potential failure point.
Both options require the same electrical work and permitting. The choice often comes down to personal preference.
Choosing the Right Location
Think about where your EV's charge port sits. Most vehicles have it on the front left or rear left side. Position your charger so the cable reaches comfortably without stretching across the vehicle or creating a tripping hazard.
For attached garages, we usually mount the charger near the panel side to minimize cable runs. Detached garages require trenching or overhead runs, which adds cost but is absolutely doable.
Outdoor installations need a weatherproof-rated charger and appropriate enclosure. If you park in your driveway, we can install a unit on an exterior wall or a pedestal mount.
Rebates and Incentives
As of now, there's no active provincial rebate for residential EV charger installation in Ontario. The previous program ended in 2020.
However, some utility providers occasionally offer incentives, and federal programs come and go. We recommend checking the Natural Resources Canada website and your local utility (Elexicon Energy serves Whitby) for current offerings.
Even without rebates, the convenience and long-term fuel savings make the investment worthwhile for most EV owners.
What to Expect During Installation
A typical installation takes 2–4 hours for straightforward jobs. More complex runs might take a full day.
